Optom Law is a website operated by Spencer Laymond.
Originally this website was setup as a trading name of SL Law (now dissolved on a solvent basis). Spencer Laymond setup SL Law as a boutique law firm focusing entirely on business law. From advising the founders at the genesis of a new business idea to the ultimate sale of the business, and in between, advising on a variety of commercial contracts for the business itself.
Spencer is not a litigator, and does not act on contentious matters. He is a legal draftsman and a negotiator. He believes prevention is better than cure. His focus is on up-front risk management, in building a fence at the top of the hill rather than have the ambulance at the bottom. His focus is making sure there is a binding contract in place, the terms accurately record the deal and are stated in the most favourable and watertight manner as they can be.
Spencer has been practicing business law for over a decade, and the bread and butter of his work is either (a) the purchase or sale of a business (b) the partnership agreement between co-owners; or (c) advising on and preparing various commercial agreements from standard day to day terms to drafting some pretty off the wall arrangements from a blank piece of paper. You won’t find him far from his green drafting pen and yellow notepad.
In October 2010 Spencer Laymond left the steady and relative safety of employment (in fact he left because it was neither steady nor safe but that is another story), to set up his own boutique business law firm – SL Law. Not that many lawyers do that. He can fairly say that he gets what “cash is king” means and what it means to take a leap of (business) faith.
